I do not have full information about how she is helping while living in USA but it appears that there is some system already in place by which people can take part of the responsibility of poor but meritorious students of developing countries. If you would like to know details then I may forward my friend's contact details in USA and you can possibly talk and get to know more directly from them. I think these types of direct financial helps are also good since you can save your Airfare, food & lodging and spend that money for the needy students.
