I think this question is valid for any and most of the world languages except for those we can see printed in literatures, catalogues and pamphlets of products or services rendered by companies like the following:

Apple, Google, IKEA, Starbucks, Al Jazeera, Sony, Samsung, LG, Toyota, Lonely Planet, Virgin, H & M, Nokia, Target, Pixar, BBC, CNN, Microsoft, Boeing, Singapore Airlines, IBM, Honda, Coca-Cola, McDonalds, HSBC, Oprah Winfrey, Amazon.com and eBay

Here’s a listing of the ten most popular languages spoken worldwide, along with the approximate number of primary or first language speakers for that language:

1. Mandarin Chinese – 882 million
2. Spanish – 325 million
3. English – 312-380 million
4. Arabic – 206-422 million
5. Hindi – 181 million
6. Portuguese – 178 million
7. Bengali – 173 million
8. Russian – 146 million
9. Japanese – 128 million
10. German – 96 million

If we take a closer look then we can find that Bengali (Bangla) commands a good standing among the languages of the world, though the practitioners are concentrated within India and Bangladesh.

In answer to your question, I would say that Bangla is as useful to know outside India as most of the above 10 languages except for the four major and universally understood languages; English, Spanish, French and German. Bangla would not help you to sail through different people, languages and countries of the world if you are stranded…lol

Hope above helps.

To the point….would be useful only in Bangladesh. It has little or nearly no use beyond. UK, USA, Germany, Australia and Middle East has concentration of Bengali people (from India and Bangladesh) but one would be conversing in English most likely.
