Hmm i think it would be the same as what u see now. Bangladesh population is too big for a little country with limited resources and it is pretty tough and a long way to be solved. icon smile How would Bangladesh be doing if Sheik Mujibur Rahman had not been assassinated ?

As far as I can remember we were heading towards or trying to emulate Cuban-style system with crooked party-men who were made district governors of all the 62 districts of Bangladesh. We the employees of government, autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies were asked to join 1-Party floated under the name and style of BAKSHAL. Though tis may not be 100% accurate, but Bangladesh would have been somewhere in-between Cuba and Albania where party would rule with heavy hand and able bodied and minded people would have fled this country. Remember how the people from GDR used to be kept from fleeing? One of the close relative must be in GDR if anyone would like to travel abroad.

But with the sad demise of Sk. Mujibur Rahman, there were few people who could have united the nation and Ziaur Rahman was one of those few. Unfortunately, Zia also got tempted for power and had to pay the price with his life. Exception is, the now chief of Jatiyo Party Gen Ershad who is befriending Sk. Hasina and the AL, even though that guy usurped the power and is having good time under the present government.

Therefore, you see, the character of the party in power now (AL) hardly changed much than what it was doing back in early 1970s when we got liberated. What can one expect from a party that has sole goal to capture power and wealth and do arm-twist the opposition parties so that dissenting voices are muffled and the jokers can run the country like children play with toys. Lack of maturity of top-leadership in the ruling party is causing the nation to disintegrate and the days are not far when a bad news from Bangladesh would not get telecast/broadcast. We can sense that the lull situation is prevailing now that can turn into very dangerous situation which none can control, be them from BNP or AL. A third force may be lurking somewhere and waiting ofr its turn. God forbid!

Did I deviate much from your inquiry? If so, then let me try again: Bangladesh may have been under the influence of India if Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was alive and kicking now. Or, we would have sunk further under the influence of USSR and India and now in changed scenario we would not have been as closer to China as we are now; our only hope for counteracting any foreign adventurers.
