I’d like to ask for any tips for a short visit in Dhaka Bangladesh. I plan to take the looong bus ride from Calcutta to Dhaka and back. Any must-see places to visit in the capital? Any tips? Tourist traps and scams i should avoid? Any info will be appreciated. Help. Thanks.

First of all, Dhaka is not famous for tourist attractions if you want to compare it with kolkata, Karachi, Bangkok, Nepal and such neighbouring cities/countries. However, you may try to see the following landmark those are laced with memorable incidents, both recent and modern history:

1. Shaheed Minar
2. Jatiyo Smriti Soudho
3. Jatiyo Sangshad Bhaban
4. Bara Katra, Lalbagh Fort, Hoseni Dalan and Ahsan Manzil.
5. Baitul Mukarram mosque
6. Dhakeshwari’s temple

Some of the Tips:

1. Watch out for the water/food borne diseases, avoid taking food and drinks from roadside or ordinary restaurants.

2. Carry own mineral/bottled water while travelling.

3. Keep your valuables in safe place or carry them securedly with you while travelling.

4. Have some known person be your tour buddy or guide. Your hotel may help you find trusted tour guides.

5. Always change your money from renowned Bank counters, like Citi Bank, StanChart, HSBC, Sonali Bank etc.

6. Never ride Scooter (CNG), Rent-a-car alone, particularly at night time travel.

7. Avoid food and drinks offered during your transit from unknown persons.

8. Have some emergency medication, first-aid items, spare spectacles, in case you need them.

9. Have emergency telephone/mobile numbers saved in your cellphone as well as written on ready to find paper/card.

10. Keep your Embassy/High Commission informed about your arrival and itinerary, if possible, so taht they can locate you easily during any emergency situation.

I am appending below some info that I wrote in reply to similar question:

Getting around Dhaka city by rickshaw is the best possible modes for the visitors to get first-hand feel or taste of the people and environment. The rickshaw-pullers are not at all educated and sometimes may try to ask a few Taka more than what they would ask from the locals. This is universal problem and a bit strong here.

The CNG drivers are sometimes known to have alliance with criminal gangs and rob belongings of the passengers once they pretend that the CNG has stopped for some mechanical or electrical trouble, when pre-planned gangs would board the CNG from both he sides of the passenger and rob him/her. This has also been tackled by the Police after a few incidents where the Reporter of the News and TV were deceived and looted of their belongings.

There are ticket counters for the A/C and non-a/c busses seen in the city where people would buy the ticket and then board the bus when it would arrive, in disciplined manner. Otherwise, bus ride in local (ordinary) busses are nightmare experience for any foreigner.

If you have anyone known in Dhaka (even from this forum) then you may ask him/her to help you with the transportation, even on payment basis, since that could help you plan best possible routes that you may take to see as much of Dhaka as possible without facing much inconveniences.

Have a nice stay in Dhaka!
