What do you think would be more beneficial and why?
A: Go to Bangladesh to help hand in hand with other missionaries giving support to a large group of abused women for one week .
B: Send the equivalent dollar amount of what it would cost to fly and stay in Bangladesh to help meet the needs of that same group.

Answer by Untamed Rose…
Contact the group and see what they could use more…your time or the money.
However…this sounds like a great opportunity for personal growth, which is never a waste.

I would choose option A. But I would make sure the group is a reputable institution of sorts. There is a lot of human trafficking in Bangladesh and you wouldn’t want to become a victim.

A:) Giving to those in need is always good plus traveling to a place one has never been can be an experience never forgotten. Do homework on the country, its customs etc.. Visit the website, read books on the subject.

If you send money most likely it will not make it to the intended people.

Don’t make the assumption that your money or efforts will be used for the common good. In India plenty of money is being ploughed into laws that supposedly help women, but in fact just make matters worse (see Domestic Violence Act in section 4 here http://www.freewebs.com/feminism-evaluated/ ).

My choice: A: Go to Bangladesh to help hand in hand with other missionaries giving support to a large group of abused women for one week.
I was involved in a technical training school set-up and run by CRS (Rome) back in 1976-77 in Dhaka Bangladesh. They recruited Swiss staffs to run establish & run that kind of school for the underprivileged male-students who were mostly dropout of lower middle class categories and most of them were non-Muslim, for obvious reason (Catholic Relief Services were the paymaster). We used to have Muslim students too, but the criteria was very specific that non-Muslim deserving candidates will get chance.
The foot on the ground yielded so much that people started believing that since the Westerners decided to come and help us ‘educate’ then the quality of education would be good; and that is very true in the context of Bangladesh where our people have the firm belief (rightly so to some extent) that ‘white’ people are very good in nature and those who come overseas are mostly the best among them. We are indebted to the selfless service given by the Swiss Staffs and Instructors to make that institution an example to emulate. That school is now standing on its own feet and earning from the business its students and ex-students (employed as technicians) and staffs are generating through Workshop output and conducting various short and long-term courses which are now on payment basis.
Btw, I was the first Instructor and Hostel Supdt of that school and I’m a Muslim too. I had my eduction from a Swiss run Technical School in Pakistan (PSTC) and I prepared the course-notes and models of demos for the school in line with what I learned in PSTC. However, I was not groomed up to take as Directorship of that School since the other guy being Christean, though not at all up to the mark to perform the job, got to run that school after the Swiss left in end-1980s. This is a bit of setback that the school got and we come to accept it when donor pays for the setup & running costs, we have to abide by their rules of business as per their agenda.
Now to come back to your question, it is always better if you can come and show yourself as an ideal and ray of hope to the abused women. That would do many times more moral boosting than sending in your money; though that is also a good help when there is nothing else to be done from far away country. Girls and women are harassed on regular basis in Bangladesh, than what I saw in Pakistan or in India.
Hope I could have given you some insights.
