If we knew the answer to your question, we could implement changes that would transform Bangladesh.

There are lots of possible answers:
1. Low level of education
2. Poor access to good health care
3. Poor government institutions.
4. Lack of infrastructure (roads, power plants, schools, machinery and equipment)

All of these factors create a “poverty trap” — low education means you get a low wage, which means you cannot afford to get more education, for example. The tricky part is trying to push the country out of the trap and into a “virtuous cycle” — better education means you get a higher wage, which means you can now afford to get more education…..

No Bangladesh is not an imperial country. It is an Islamic country with high population density, high illeteracy, and high corruption. It probably has no future and will turn into a land of maffia rule.

I am from Bangladesh. Let me first congratulate ‘Allan’ above who has got the near perfect analysis for the causes of poverty in Bangladesh. I would list lack of proper and patriotic political leadership is the main reason for Bangladesh to remain in the poverty’s vicious cycle for 36 years now after we achieved our independence from Pakistan.

Btw, Bangladesh, like that of Pakistan, India and so many countries under the Commonwealth, was once ruled by an Imperial country – The UK. So, to automatically inherit wealth of the Imperial masters were out of question for whole of Indian subcontinent, not to speak about Bangladesh. The Indians made tremendous improvements over Pakistan mainly due to the better political leadership Indians had in comparison to Pakistan, which spent most of its time either under direct Military rule or under military rules disguised as Basic Democracy or whatever we can see till today.

We are fortunate in January 2007 when all the dirty-politicians are being hauled by the newly installed Caretaker Government being headed by Chief Advisor Dr. Fakhruddin with able guidance by his 10-Members of Advisors.

Particularly the Advisor of Law Barrister Mainul Hosein, the Communication Advisor Maj. General (Retd.) M.A. Matin are doing superb job and barring corrupt, inefficient and loud-mouthed politicians from re-entering the politics, who were depriving the nation from the entry of young and progressive leadership for the last 15+ years. We may now have the audacity to hope that Bangladesh may see better future in coming years!

There are many countries in this world that are having identical geographical, even worst case than Bangladesh, but they could master the natural calamities in such a way that the visitations of such calamities are taken care of with minimum loss of properties and life. The Netherlands (Holland) is an ideal example some part of which is below the sea level. Bangladesh is not below the sea-level, but almost at par with sea level.

PS. Insane above (the name suggest, being mad and/or extremely foolish) has made some not so sane Answer, which may fall at the verge of being ‘dirty’ if not naughty.

Most of the communities in the entire Indian sub-continent(such as Bengali) are succumbed in ‘Culture of Poverty’(Oscar Lewis), irrespective of class or economic strata, lives in pavement or apartment. Nobody is genuinely regret ed or ashamed of the deep-rooted corruption, decaying general quality of life, worst Politico-admin system, bad work place, weak mother language, continuous consumption of common social space (mental as well as physical, both). We are becoming fathers & mothers only by self-procreation, mindlessly & blindfold(supported by some lame excuses). Simply depriving their(the children) fundamental rights of a decent, caring society, fearless & dignified living. Do not ever look for any other positive alternative behaviour (values) to perform human way of parenthood, i.e. deliberately co-parenting children those are born out of ignorance, extreme poverty. It seems that all of us are being driven only by the very animal instinct. If the Bengali people ever be able to bring that genuine freedom (from vicious cycle of ‘poverty’) in their own attitude, involve themselves in ‘Production of Space’ (Henri Lefebvre), an intense attachment with the society at large – one different pathway has to create to overcome inherent ‘hopeless’ psyche; decent, rich Politics will definitely come up. – Siddhartha Bandyopadhyay, 16/4, Girish Banerjee Lane, Howrah-711101, India.
