Since I don’t live in those places, I don’t know what happens to any person who stands up and fights for any rights.

Here in America I think the one big force that has allowed gay people to move forward is coming out to friends and family. Sure some friends and family are hostile to such things. But there are those who are not. Those who are not become allies in the cause. They add their voices to fight and the noise grows louder. In time the noise becomes too loud to ignore.

When you come out to someone else, you humanize yourself and other lesbians and gays. Any stereotypes or misconceptions your friends and family have can be corrected. It’s easy to oppress and have dim views of people you don’t know. It’s harder to have such views when you know someone who is in the group you oppress.

All gay liberation is local. What works in America or South Africa or Russia may or may not work in other parts of the world. I know that Islam is supposed to have a zero tolerance of LGBT. But Christianity in the U.S. was very intolerant too and attitudes have slowly changed.
